Breaking news: Airport taxis might not be legit!

From the "No shit, Sherlock" department:

The UK Foreign Office sent out an alert recently, that unlicensed cabs at Indonesian airports might - gasp! - be charging people too much money. Not only that, they're "in poor condition, are unmetered, and don't have a dashboard identity license." Sacre bleu!

First of all, sounds like most New York City cabs. (As Jerry Seinfeld once famously said, all you need to get a cab license is to have a face.) Secondly, as Lonely Planet or any other handy travel guidebook will advise, quasi-airport-cab leeches are a common sight in Jakarta and around the world. Get into a car with some schlump in his cousin's beat-up '89 Tercel, and you deserve to be charged more money.

In other breaking news, the sun rises in the east.

Ooh *shudders* ...

but joke aside, I'd prefer to take a bus if I don't have enough cash to hail a Silver Bird. It's reliable, the driver won't sneakily drive you through suspicious looking streets and so on

I was frequently cheated by locals in london. Why the alert was not issued for their own "crime". Taxis in jakarta airport is fairly operated, and it is really affordable, good condition, good aircon, good driver. Wanna experince bad things with taxi driver? go to Kuala Lumpur. I was once charged RM 300 for a short drive, and he then said to me innocently, 'next time, be careful in picking taxi in KL"

I think airports naturally attract all sorts of skeevy characters. In New York City everything is regulated, and yet if you're not on your guard, some fake taxi driver will happily take you for everything you have. Such is life ...
